Frequently Asked Questions
  • 1. When are your grant proposal deadlines?

Proposals are considered bi-annually on the following dates. If either date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on the preceding business day.

    Spring

    May 15th by 5:00 p.m.

    Fall

    November 15th by 5:00 p.m.

  • 2. What is the average dollar amount of an awarded grant?

Grant amounts vary based on applicants’ size and need as well as the Charitable Trust’s annual grantmaking budget. For guidance, previous grants have ranged from as small as $1,000 to as large as $20,000.

  • 3. Is there an application form or does the Charitable Trust have a preferred submission format?

The Charitable Trust has not adopted an application form and will accept proposals in any format (e.g. Word, PDF) as long as the submission contains all information described here: Grant Guidelines

  • 4. May an organization apply for general operating support, or must it propose support for a specific project?

Yes, applications may request support for general operations.

  • 5. What are the chances that my proposal will receive support?

This is difficult to assess; the Charitable Trust receives many applications each year and funds those projects that support the goals and objectives of the Charitable Trust and the Greenewalt family, as well as those that will make a significant difference with lasting tangible results. It is important to provide a detailed explanation of how the funds will be used and what other resources your organization does (or does not) have available. Please note that the Trustees will review all applications in their entirety and will notify all organizations of their decision whether or not they have decided to award a grant.

  • 6. How do I submit a grant application?

Please read through the Grant Guidelines for details regarding the application process and specific instructions on submitting a grant proposal.

  • 7. How long does it take for a proposal to be reviewed?

The Trustees meet bi-annually in the spring and fall to consider grant proposals. All applicants will be notified of the Trustees’ decision shortly after their meetings.

  • 8. If my proposal is approved, how long will it take to be funded?

Grant checks are typically mailed shortly after a proposal is approved. If your organization requires electronic funds transfer, please clearly request as much in the organization’s proposal.

  • 9. My organization was not awarded a grant. Can you provide specific feedback?

Typically, the Charitable Trust does not provide specific feedback on why it declined to fund a proposal.

  • 10. My organization was not awarded a grant. May I re-apply in a future grant cycle?

Yes. The Trustees are delighted to receive many great proposals each year, and regret that Charitable Trust has limited budget to approve them all. If your organization or project works in service of one of the Charitable Trust’s core mission areas (arts, science, education, health care, historical preservation, community services, animal welfare, and the environment) but is declined in a particular cycle, we are happy to consider a future submission.

  • 11. Does the Charitable Trust support organizations and projects outside of New England or Mid-Atlantic?

If your organization or project is not in the New England or Mid-Atlantic regions but you have a specific, compelling need that is in service of one of the Charitable Trust’s core mission areas (arts, science, education, health care, historical preservation, community services, animal welfare, and the environment ) the Trust will consider your proposal.

  • 12. My question is not listed. How can I contact the Charitable Trust?
